The Chinese University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow (Intellectual Property Law) (Ref. 190000MT).
Intellectual property (IP) issues have played an important part in US-China trade relations. With rapid industrial development in China, the very nature of IP issues between these two countries have transformed dramatically from piracy and counterfeiting to the alleged systematic theft of high-end technologies. This transformation has led to some challenging policy debates relevant to forced technology transfer, cybersecurity and trade secret leakage, cross-border transmission of data, restrictions of 5G investment and procurement, etc. Each of these issues deserves more academic and policy discussion, which will benefit Sino-US trade relations and the economic development in the Asia-Pacific Region in the long run. In the meantime, Hong Kong has speeded up its policy promoting innovation and entrepreneurship based on its existing advantage as an international financial centre. IP policy will be crucial for the city to reinforce its importance in the digitally-networked globe.
JOB DESCRIPTION: In this context, the Faculty of Law at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK Law) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow position in intellectual property (IP) law, international trade and information policy to work on the "The Role of IP in Sino-US Relations", under its Impact Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme. Applicants are expected to work with Professor Jyh-An Lee to produce research with a demonstrable impact for the legal community, non-governmental organisations and other beneficiaries.
This appointment is designed to cultivate early-stage academics with a keen interest in making a significant "Impact" on society. Impact is defined "as the demonstrable contributions, beneficial effects, valuable changes or advantages that research qualitatively brings to the economy, society, culture, public policy or services, health, the environment or quality of life; and that are beyond the academia." The notion of "Impact" is becoming a major aspect of Research, as evidenced by the increasing emphasis put on impact in the Research Excellent Framework (REF) in the United Kingdom and the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in Hong Kong. Hence, the appointee will be expected to take part in designing and conducting research in innovative ways, with a view to have a positive effect on identified beneficiaries.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have (i) a PhD or equivalent in Law, ideally Intellectual Property Law, Information Law, or Innovation Policy; (ii) demonstrated academic capabilities and/or practical experience in intellectual property law, information law, or innovation technology (ideally with publications in these fields); (iii) capacity to interact with the industry and/or policy-makers; and (iv) a strong command of English.
Responsibilities of the appointee are exclusively research-related and consist in working under the supervision of the Principal Investigator on the Role of IP in the Sino-US Relations. Duties include (a) writing research reports and publish in reputable academic outlets; (b) hosting workshops to present findings; and (c) organising and liaising with identified beneficiaries.
Appointment will initially be made on contract basis for one year commencing August 2019, renewable subject good performance, funding availability and mutual agreement.

Postdoctoral Fellow (Criminal Justice)
The Faculty of Law at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK Law) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow position under its Impact Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme. (Ref. 190000KF).
Impact is increasing taking on importance with respect to research, as evident by the emphasis on impact in the Research Excellent Framework (REF) in the United Kingdom and the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in Hong Kong. Impact is defined as the demonstrable contributions, beneficial effects, valuable changes or advantages that research qualitatively brings to the economy, society, culture, public policy or services, health, the environment or quality of life; and that are beyond the academia.
This appointment is designed to cultivate early-stage academics with a keen interest in making a significant contribution to society. The appointee will be expected to conduct research on various aspects relating to criminal justice. Research may include but is not limited to the following: sentencing, guilty pleas, procedural justice, access to justice and empirical analyses. The aim is to translate the research into demonstrable impact for the legal community, non-governmental organisations and other beneficiaries.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have (i) a PhD (or equivalent qualification) in Law or Criminology/Criminal Justice obtained within the last five years; (ii) research interest in criminal justice, criminal law and/or law and society; (iii) existing publication record in recognized international journals, or book chapters and/or monographs with reputable publishers; and (iv) fluency in English and strong writing skills. A good command of statistics will be advantageous.
Duties include (a) conducting research projects relating to criminal justice that will likely make an impact to identified beneficiaries; (b) writing research reports and publish in reputable academic outlets; (c) hosting workshops to present findings; and (d) organising and liaising with identified beneficiaries.
Appointment will initially be made on contract basis for one year commencing June 2019, renewable subject to good performance, funding availability and mutual agreement.

Call For Expressions of Interest for Post-Doctoral Positions
The Griffith University Law Futures Centre (LFC) seeks expressions of interest from suitably qualified, highly motivated post-doctoral candidates for up to two positions. Each position will be contracted for two years, with the possibility of renewal or converting to a continuing teaching and research position at the Griffith Law School (subject to funding).
Successful candidates must provide the details of a well thought out five to eight year research agenda that is directly tied to the applicant's current plans to attract external funding through a nationally competitive grant program administered by the Australian Research Council (eg Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA)) or another nationally or internationally competitive grant scheme listed in the Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).
QUALIFICATIONS: While expressions of interest are welcome from post-doctoral candidates specialising in any area of law, preference will be given to candidates who are researching in the following areas:
- Challenges and Opportunities for 21st Century Professions - We seek a researcher to join a dynamic team building on the themes explored in our recent Professional Futures Conference (see conference website) to seek long term funding. The researcher will engage in a mixture of own motion and joint research. The researcher should have a strong interest in at least one profession, preferably from an interdisciplinary perspective.
- Regulating Data - we seek a researcher steeped in the host of issues raised by ever expanding sets of data across all forms of human activity - agriculture, finance, health, environmental, transport, social media, the internet of things and so on – and eager to engage in research at the intersections between commercial opportunities and regulatory gaps related to ownership, digital storage, privacy, human rights, equitable access and others.
- Rights of Nature - we seek a researcher ready to lead a project exploring the 'rights of nature' concept to solve governance gaps in the world's oceans that are in areas beyond national jurisdiction. The research will explore a variety of legal fields including international environmental law, human rights and law of the sea. The researcher can lead or coordinate an interdisciplinary team of researchers to deliver research outcomes and outputs on a range of research questions.
Candidates must also have excellent proficiency for teaching and presenting in English.
