In the last few months we've had many new subscribers to our newsletter. Welcome! Every other week we use this newsletter to share historical records from NARA's holdings, demonstrate Catalog functionality, and provide ways to volunteer as a Citizen Archivist to enhance the records in the National Archives Catalog.
We have many volunteer opportunities to transcribe and tag historical records. This work can be done online from any computer, anywhere, at any time. You can do as little or as much as you want. Everything helps!
If you are new to transcribing, take a look at our Register and Get Started page to sign up for an account, and we also we recommend visiting our Resources page on our dashboard. This page contains step-by-step instructions, as well as video tutorials and guides to walk you through the process.
Ready to get started? Visit our Citizen Archivist Missions page anytime where we always have missions and individual records to work on. We update this page on a regular basis, so check back often to see what's new.
Questions? Contact us directly at citizenarchivist@nara.gov We are happy to help answer specific questions as you begin to contribute.
We look forward to your contributions!
Newsletter Highlights
Whether you are a new or returning subscriber, you might be interested in some of our favorite newsletters from the past year. Here are some highlights that may be useful to your research:
More than 6,000 digitized photographs of U.S. Marine Corps activities in World War II and Korea were added to the Catalog this year. A large portion of this incredible series covers USMC presence in Korea, with additional images dating back to the advent of photography and covering a wide variety of USMC activities.
Did you know that military pension files may contain valuable details about family history? While military veterans who applied for benefits had to provide evidence of service, widows or dependents had to provide evidence of their relationship to soldiers. As a result, some military pension files in the National Archives contain very interesting, and sometimes surprising items.
Have you ever come across electronic records in the Catalog and wanted to understand more about them? What exactly are electronic records, what is available, how to research within them? This newsletter takes a closer look at these valuable records and shows you how to use them as a resource in your research.
Are you a genealogist, or interested in researching your family history? The National Archives holds many valuable records that can help you research your family history. These include pension files, Census records, military personnel files, ship passenger lists, naturalization records, and Freedmen's Bureau materials. We've recently updated our Catalog Guide for Genealogists to provide more information about the records available in the Catalog and search tips.
Transcriptions made by our Citizen Archivists are enhancing searchability of records in the Catalog. If you would like to explore a series of records, such as Records of Divisions from World War I, this newsletter demonstrates how to perform a "search within" records in the Catalog.
