[theophilus@asymptotejournal.com: Asymptote: Your application for Chinese Social Media Manager]

Subject: Asymptote: Your application for Chinese Social Media Manager

Dear Susan,

I'm Theophilus, a Singaporean poet and Chief Executive Assistant at *Asymptote
- *many thanks for your application to join our team! I'm writing to follow
up on your application for *Chinese Social Media Manager*.

Now, I'd like to make sure up front that you know that the position you are
applying for is *unpaid*, and will require about 12 hours a week for the
first three months--a probationary period, during which we will help you
build a foundation for work with us in a permanent capacity-- and will
probably entail about 6 to 8 hours a week for the permanent position, with
two weeks off every quarter.

It's also possible to apply for a sabbatical of up to three months every
year, with good reason. Another thing you might be happy to learn about is
that we often volunteer outside of our roles at *Asymptote*, per our own
inclinations. It's very possible to volunteer to record a segment for the
podcast, review a book for the "What's New in Translation" column at the
blog <http://asymptotejournal.com/blog>, help out with slushpile reading,
or even with organizing an event. In short, be prepared to be steeped in
the world of translation!

It remains for me to ask you, if you have no problem with this sort of time
commitment, and are okay with being unpaid, to answer the follow-up
questions by your midnight, i.e. 2359hrs, of next *Wednesday, 15 March. *

General Questions

1. We crossed our 6-year mark this January. What direction do you see
*Asymptote* taking in the next 2 years or so, and what do you think you can
bring to the table? Make a passionate case for yourself.

2. Could you tell us about a time when working across regional/cultural
lines was challenging?

3. How do you see yourself promoting *Asymptote* to your network, and
beyond?

4. Can you name your top 5 pieces from Asymptote (from the current issue
<http://www.asymptotejournal.com/index.php> or past
<http://www.asymptotejournal.com/archive.php>) and tell me why these
are your favorites?

5. If we aren't able to give you the position you are applying for, what
other positions might you consider? (All currently available roles are
listed in this call <http://asymptotejournal.com/join.php>)

6. Do let us know anything else that might be relevant to your application that
hasn't been covered yet/would help establish a strong case
for your candidacy, including links to published work.

Specific Questions - Chinese Social Media Manager

1. What kinds of literary magazines/journals/publications have you been
reading/subscribing to? Please list all that apply, including both English
and Chinese ones.

2. Please list your favorite poets/novelists/non-fiction writers, three for
each category, in the realm of Sinophone (Chinese-speaking) literature
(including China, HK, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, etc.)., and briefly
state the reasons why.

3. Please tell us about two pieces of Sinophone literary news that you have
noticed in recent three months, and please tell us why you think they are
important.

4. What are your suggestions for attracting more followers and enhancing
our social media pages (Weibo and Douban)?

5. Please pick three recent literary news and write three Weibo posts for
them in Chinese.

6. Please write three Weibo posts promoting three of your favourite pieces
from our archive.

If shortlisted, we will contact you in the following week for an interview.

All best,

Theophilus Kwek,

Chief Executive Assistant, *Asymptote *
